Three's Company is based on a British show that was called "MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE," and we learn the set-up of the show in the pilot of the same name (episode 1 - "A Man About The House"). The American version is located in Santa Monica in the late 70s and early 80s and the premise is that two girls find a man in thier bathtub after a going away party for their roomate Eleanor. The two girls, Janet Wood and  Chrissy Snow, let that man, Jack Tripper, stay on as their third roomate. 


The only problem is that the landlord,  Stanley Roper, would never allow that kind of "perverted" lifestyle to occur in his building. To remain in the building, the group tell The Ropers that Jack is gay. Helen Roper, Stanley's wife, finds out that Jack isn't gay by the second episode, but she doesn't mind. In fact, she's happy when Jack gets some. When the Roper's sell the building and Ralph Furley moves in, the illusion must continue. Although Ralph is a MACHO guy, he can't have any horseplay in his (brother's) building.
